Selecting an RV Carport for Your RV or Large Vehicle

6 minute read

What is an RV carport and how does it differ from a regular carport?

An RV carport is a type of protective shelter or cover designed specifically for recreational vehicles (RVs). It is typically made of metal or wood and has a roof to protect the RV from the elements, such as rain, snow, and direct sunlight. These carports are typically large enough to accommodate the size of an RV and may also have walls or side panels to provide additional protection. Some carports may also have additional features, such as electrical outlets or lighting, to make it easier to use and maintain your RV.

The Benefits of Having a Carport to Protect Your RV

Investing in a carport for your RV offers numerous advantages, helping you safeguard your recreational vehicle while enhancing its lifespan and usability. Here are the key benefits:

1. Protection from Weather Elements

Sun Damage: Prolonged exposure to UV rays can cause fading and cracking of your RV’s exterior, as well as damage to the tires and interior furnishings. A carport provides shade, reducing these risks.

Rain and Snow: Heavy rain or snow can lead to rust, water leaks, or structural damage. A  carport ensures your vehicle stays dry and safe.

Hail and Wind: Severe storms can cause dents, scratches, or broken windows. A sturdy carport acts as a shield against these hazards.

2. Cost-Effective Alternative to Indoor Storage

RV storage facilities can be expensive, especially for long-term parking. A carport offers a one-time investment for permanent protection at your home, saving money over time.

3. Convenience and Accessibility

With an carport on your property:

  • You have easy, 24/7 access to your vehicle.
  • Prepping for trips and performing maintenance is more convenient than traveling to an off-site storage facility.
  • You can also use the space for temporary storage of supplies or equipment.

4. Enhanced Longevity of Your RV

By reducing exposure to harsh environmental conditions, a carport minimizes wear and tear. This helps maintain your RV’s resale value and reduces the need for frequent repairs or replacements.

5. Customizable Options

RV carports come in various styles, sizes, and materials (e.g., metal, wood, or composite), allowing you to match the structure to your home or landscape. You can also choose to add:

  • Side panels for additional protection.
  • Gutters and downspouts for proper water drainage.
  • Electric hookups for easier maintenance and preparation.

6. Multi-Purpose Functionality

Beyond protecting your RV, an RV carport can also be used for:

  • Shelter for other vehicles, boats, or trailers.
  • Outdoor gatherings or storage space during the off-season.
  • A covered workspace for projects.

7. Improved Property Value

A well-designed carport for your RV can enhance the aesthetic and utility of your property, potentially increasing its market value. Buyers who own RVs may view this as a desirable feature.
